It is a rare occasion to meet cellist Martin Rummel in his hometown Vienna, which is not a great surprise if you consider the variety of his musical activities: Born in 1974, he enjoys a successful career as a soloist and chamber musician, taking him to the world’s leading venues and festivals, where his performances of an exceptionally broad repertoire from the Baroque to the contemporary are acclaimed equally by audiences and critics. Furthermore, Mr Rummel has gained international praise for his commented editions of the cello studies by Popper, Duport, Grützmacher, Lee, Merk and Battanchon for the Bärenreiter-Verlag and the accompanying CDs for Musicaphon. He has worked with some of the world’s most eminent composers, such as Schnittke, Gubaidulina and Pintscher, and has premiered more than 20 new works, amongst which are five cello concertos.

Mr Rummel is the director of “Festival Gitarre Wien” and “Klassik Musikfest Mühlviertel” and, since 2009, has been teaching violoncello at The University of Auckland’s School of Music. As a hobby, he is the author of two crime novels “Partita Opus Eins” and “Suite Opus Drei”, published by Brockmeyer Verlag Bochum, and is the presenter of the monthly radio show “Rummel’s Rubrik” for Radio Stephansdom, an Austrian classical music station. Mr Rummel proudly uses strings by Thomastik-Infeld, Vienna.

New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge is one of the most exciting and versatile musicians of his generation. He studied at The University of Auckland’s School of Music, and then with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His career was launched after winning the Gold Medal from the Guildhall, and the NFMS Young Concert Artists’ Award, and he has since maintained a diverse and wide-ranging performing schedule, as soloist, chamber musician and song accompanist. Stephen’s solo performances have taken him throughout the UK, including five solo recitals in the Wigmore Hall in London, where he made his acclaimed debut in 1999. He has also given solo performances in Hong Kong, Italy, France, Singapore, Japan, Australia and the USA. Concerto appearances include the Philharmonia (London) and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestras, and performances in the Barbican and Fairfield Halls.

He has recorded solo works of Bliss, Messiaen and Arvo Pärt, for whom he made the world premiere recording of the piano sonatinas. He also made the premiere recording of the 4 Piano Preludes of Gorecki. As a chamber musician, Stephen has collaborated with groups such as Chamber Domaine, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, the English Chamber Orchestra Ensemble and the Scottish Ensemble.

Recent chamber music performances have been in New York, Dresden, Bogotà, Shanghai, Paris and Beijing, and he has performed at many international festivals in the UK and abroad. Stephen De Pledge is Senior Lecturer in piano at the School of Music.
