Jade Monkey, February 24-26
At last. A real buzz from a Fringe program about music only. No comedy, no theatrics, just gutsy music played with passion, intelligence and technique to be seen to be believed.
Young Adelaide graduates Julia Flint (two violins), Anna Coleman (two clarinets) and Chris Lian-Lloyd (piano) rattled the back street dive's cages -and our sternums -with an hour plus of the 20th century's boldest breakaway trios.
Folk traditions abounded. Singable tunes and itchy rhythms rendered the insistent dissonance palatable. And jazz! Their signature piece, Bartok's Contrasts, written for Benny Goodman, no less, in 1938, mixed jazz and formal idioms into a new brew. All three players had spectacular turns in the spotlight, silky-smooth Coleman of course having the best of them.
Menage launched with relish into Paul Schoenfield's exhilarating fusion of Hassidic, Cossack, jazz and classical with breackneck tempi, and when you thought it could not possibly get faster and more frenetic, it did.
