Formica Formations, an extraordinary collection of sculptured chairs created by nine world-renowned architects, is set to land in New Zealand in March 2011.
The collection was created in 2008 in conjunction with the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Cincinnati.
Leading architects including Jaime Velez, part of the team designing Burj Khalifa the world’s tallest building in Dubai, and Zaha Hadid were challenged to design a limited collection of chairs using Formica laminates and solid surface materials. The result is a visually stunning collection of chairs from museum-worthy sculptures to functional domestic pieces. Hadid’s original chair, Cirrus, fetched US$200,000 at auction.
The exhibition will appear as part of the Auckland Arts Festival 2011. Admission is free.
