This creative ensemble forges new paths for Chinese music and opera blending classical and traditional folk-music with the work of innovative contemporary composers to present a concert that is evocative, refreshingly appealing and accessible.
Blending traditional folk-music with contemporary compositions, this wonderful ensemble is forging new paths for Chinese music and opera.
The New Purple Forbidden City Orchestra was created by 10 virtuoso traditional instrument players engaged in education and performance at Beijing’s famous conservatories of music. This talented ensemble forges new paths for Chinese music and opera blending classical and traditional folk-music with the work of innovative contemporary composers.
The music is evocative, refreshingly appealing and accessible. No academic stuffiness here, but fresh, vital sounds with a decidedly 21st century feel. The unique sonorities of traditional Chinese instruments are melded together into new sound-worlds, to reflect the great changes taking place in Chinese culture and society.
The programme of chamber works of an extraordinary range of styles includes the world premiere of a composition by Gao Weijie, father of well-known New Zealand-based composer Gao Ping.
