Luke Hurley has announced a solo show. Luke was last on the Island when he opened for the Billy T James anniversary show at the Theatre in August.
Mike Gray, who watched Luke perform in Hokitika last year after meeting him in a restaurant beforehand, is promoting the show. “Luke is one of the most talented singer/songwriters I have ever come across. For anyone who likes music, you need to see Luke perform live. He has a quiet, unassuming stage presence - but once he starts strumming that guitar, suddenly it’s like loose electricity is flowing through the room. He is totally captivating and a musical genius, in my opinion. I liken him to being a cross somewhere between Mark Knopfler, Paul Simon and David Byrne. His songs are melodic, thought provoking and eccentrically quirky.”
Luke was born in Kenya, before moving to Gore in Southland when he was 12 years old. Growing up in Kenya and Zanzibar exposed Luke to Arabic, African and Indian styles of music, which have influenced him to this day. He is now based in Auckland, and has toured with artists such as Michelle Shocked and Marianne Faithfull, but is more likely to be found at fringe festivals or even busking. He has self-recorded the equivalent of 8 albums since the early 1980s and has a repertoire of songs spanning almost 30 years. “If you have never heard of him,” says Gray, “that’s because he works outside of the confines of the music industry. But seeing is believing, so I encourage everyone to come along for a great night out.”
Prepaid tickets can be purchased from the Theatre’s TimeOut Café (open 9am-3pm Mon-Sat).
