The Whangarei Art Museum is proud to present Jan Nigro's suite of new works on paper for the New Year at the new art museum.
At 91, Jan Nigro M.B.E. ( b. 1920), one of our most venerated artists is remarkable in that she is still producing such powerful and evocative bodies of work such as " Lady Chatterleys Lover".
When Jan Nigro began to comtemplate the new series of works she was developing around Lawerence's infamous novel, Lady Chatterleys Lover, she was intriged to find a common thread in response. It was a memory that those who had read the book had for "blue forget-me-knots on red hair". It struck her that it was not the sensational response one receives for merely mentioning D.H.Larence's 1928 novel.
It is hard to believe that until the 1950s D.H. Lawernce's most notorious book Lady Chatterleys Lover, was still banned in New Zealand and was even referred to the Indecent Publications Tribunal in 1965 when a cheap paperback edition was published. The book remains banned in some countries of the world in the 21st century.
