Lovers of Baroque music are in for a treat as renowned concert organist Kemp English will present a programme featuring the organ music of J.S. Bach. This performance - part of Nelson Cathedral’s regular 12.00 noon organ recital series - marks something of a departure for English from his usual concert programmes. For the last ten years Kemp English has thrilled audiences around the world with his ‘Stormin’ Norma’ presentations showcasing repertoire from his 3 ‘Stormin’ Norma’ CDs recorded on the magnificent organ of the Dunedin Town Hall. However, English is keen to get back to his roots as a classically trained organist and there is no better place to start than with the music of J.S. Bach.
Complete cycles of Bach’s organ music have been on the European musical menu for decades. For his Nelson Cathedral audience, English will present a snap-shot of Bach’s great organ works, featuring one work from each of the major genres of Toccata and Fugue, Prelude and Fugue, Trio Sonata, Vivaldi Concerto arrangement and Chorale Prelude.
Programme:
J.S. Bach:
Toccata & Fugue in D minor (Dorian), BWV 538
Trio Sonata in E flat major, BWV 525
Allegro, Adagio, Allegro
Chorale Prelude on "In dir ist freude" BWV 615
Concerto in A minor (after Vivaldi), BWV 593
Allegro, Adagio, Allegro
Chorale Prelude on "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" BWV 645
Prelude and Fugue in D, BWV 532
