This Queen's Birthday Weekend Auckland Zoo invites you to come in for a first sneak peek of The Forest area of our amazing New Zealand development, Te Wao Nui, scheduled to open later this year.
The special three-day only opening is in celebration of World Environment Day (Sun 5 June) which this year, the International Year of the Forests, has chosen the theme 'Forests; Nature at your service'.
Previously the Zoo's NZ aviary, The Forest is one of six distinct ecological zones within Te Wao Nui, that come September, will be home to some of our most precious New Zealand native bird species.
Zoo staff will be on hand to answer your questions, and from The Forest's stunning view platform, you can check out how construction of Te Wao Nui's 'The Islands' precinct is coming along. Plus, at 11.30am each day, there'll be a special NZ fauna keeper talk on Te Wao Nui and the vital role the forest habitat plays for our native species.
To help towards further protecting our forests, the Zoo is asking visitors for a gold coin donation to come and explore The Forest. All the money raised will go towards supporting two habitat restoration projects - one local New Zealand project - to restore Meola Creek and one overseas project - protecting habitat in Sumatra's Bukit Tigapuluh National Park.
If you're keen to get hands-on for forests you can help our friends from the Kaipatiki Project and Environment Centre to pot native seedlings that will be used for local restoration projects. The Kaipatiki Trust is joining us in celebrating World Environment Day and has much to share about their efforts and how you can get involved in further protecting and restoring our wild places.
World Environment Day is a celebrated global day that aims to create awareness of environmental issues and encourage action - so come on in to the Zoo over the long weekend and celebrate with us.
Normal Zoo admission prices apply over Queen’s Birthday weekend.
