Minuit [minwee] are the Kiwi band with the French name jigglin' hips and heads from Haiti to Helsinki.
Enigmatic blitz of a nymph Ruth Carr fronts the band with her “unerring ability to nail the vocals to the beat”, while bandmates Ryan and Paul hammer their machines like shimmering and shining lights.
Over the summer Minuit released a free remix download every Monday to the first 100 takers – Top class remixes arrived from The UpBeats, Aural Trash, Agent Alvin and (Aussie-cum-Kiwi rep) Dan Aux; fresh up-and-comers K-Lab, SickCycle, Circuit and Wellington's damsel of dubstep Alexis K; and regulars Funk'n'slocuts, Simon Flower (Poker Flat) and Finland's 501.
Minuit have bundled together the best and brightest of these to appear on the upcoming 'Dance Music Will Tear Us Apart, Again' - and Sandwiches is hosting the party for the release.
It's an international quality night not to miss.
Minuit's sound is as distinctive as it is addictive. They've had tunes on US TV shows Grey's Anatomy and Bones. Australia's Rave Magazine suggests “the shimmering 'I'm Still Dancing' beats New Yorkers' Telepathe at their own game".
Carr has even penned a book 'I Felt Like A Fight Alright?' full of one-liners, poems, lyrics and small tales. “I meant to hand you a bowl of love, but instead it was a colander – sorry”.
And for those who somehow don't know of Minuit, check out what our friends in the northern hemisphere said:
“We already know New Zealanders are like those quirky, younger cousins using their geographical isolation to produce left-field takes on comedy, art, music, beats and concepts – as if their distance gives them some sort of license to get all esoteric on it.
So when we say Minuit are a “female-fronted-electronic-outfit” your brain will jump immediately to other groups you know who fit that tag, and dismiss it as being derivative of whatever bands jump to mind.
But the trick here is that they're Kiwis, so nothing fits the moulds! It's dark and its clever and it takes a bit of getting used to. Go see them!”
