Family Cactus release their second album!
Wellington six-piece Family Cactus will release their second album "Spirit Lights" on Arch Hill. The album was recorded at Roundhead Studios in Auckland and the Surgery in Wellington. It was then mastered in New York at Stirling Sounds by Greg Calbi (Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen) in late 2010 while the band were based there for several months.
“Spirit Lights” is a more ethereal, spacious release than their debut album,“Come Howling” combining a wider range of instrumentation and ideas. A new rhythm section (Matthew Armitage and Reese McNaughton) has given the band a new life and taken the songs in new directions.
Led by multi-instrumentalist/composer/singer Adam Ladley, Family Cactus comprises six members of differing musical pedigrees. The co-lead vocals of Ladley and Nina Siegler propel songs into story-driven mind-movies. Ladley populates his songwriting with characters and perspectives: from miners facing tragedy in crumbling coal towns, to bored suburban teenage punks bent on petty destruction. However, far from couching these tales in the time-honoured, uniformly-downcast troubadour style, Family Cactus sculpt a multi-textured, hook-laden, vividly-imagined musical kaleidoscope where the subjects of Ladley's observational songs burst into life.
‘Fields and Fields’ is the first single from the album, released in conjunction with a live video filmed and recorded at Erskine College.
