Niven Room - Seven Sisters - Nga Hauwähine e Whitu
Based on the Matariki constellation of seven stars, this is an exhibition that brings together the work of seven vibrant female artists of Ngäti Tüwharetoa descent; sisters that share a common bond in that they have established successful careers and notoriety in contemporary Mäori art practice with in Aotearoa New Zealand and on the world stage, inspiring new generations to reach their highest potential.
Seven Sisters: 1) June Grant, 2) Veranoa Hetet, 3) Kataraina Hetet, 4) Paerau Corneal, 5) Te Maari Gardiner, 6) Edna Pahewa and work from the late Dawn Schuster-Smith & Emily Schuster, 7) Roka Ngarimu-Cameron
Main Gallery - Beacons of Light - Ngä Mata Kakä
Featuring work from approx 30 artists of Tüwharetoa descent, Matariki provides an opportunity to come together, share knowledge and skills and learn about the land we live on. We remember our whakapapa (ancestry) and the legacy they passed on teaching us the importance of passing on knowledge. All participating artists have been asked to focus on this particular aspect of Matariki.
In the spirit of this theme and to acknowledge excellence, artists have also been sent a poem for inspiration written by one of Aotearoa’s most celebrated contemporary Mäori writers and local icon Rowley Habib.
