Join author Chris Bourke on a wonderful journey into the ‘lost dawn’ of New Zealand popular music. In this fascinating talk, Bourke will delve into the lost sounds and images of Rotorua and New Zealand's pop music scene, in the days before – and during – rock 'n' roll.
This was the era, in the mid-20th century, when dramatic changes took place. When the waltz gave way to swing, jive evolved into rock 'n' roll and new media, such as radio and record players, took their place alongside the piano at home.
When TANZA (To Assist New Zealand Artists) record label released their debut hit Blue Smoke in 1949, performed by Pixie Williams and composed by Ruru Karaitiana, a recording industry emerged that celebrated locally made pop music.
Rotorua has played a key role in the birth of New Zealand pop.
It was here where Ana Hato and Deane Waretini made their seminal recordings. Epi Shalfoon's Melody Boys brought swing to the dance halls. Tai Paul and his Pohutu Boys held court. And the Howard Morrison Quartet revolutionised the music industry.
Chris Bourke is author of the widely acclaimed Blue Smoke: the Lost Dawn of Popular Music 1918-1964.
