Grant McSherry: Originals

Although work by Canterbury artist Grant McSherry has been selling since 2002, his original oil paintings have seldom been on exhibition – by design. According to the artist, his initial vision was to focus primarily on producing limited edition art prints. Grant says although he will continue with his prints he is intent on achieving greater recognition as a New Zealand landscape painter through his original works.

The catalyst for change, he says, is his first solo exhibition to be held at Terrace Downs June 03 – 7th July 2011. “I want to move my priority from putting work in cyber space to the more traditional approach of getting it on real walls, where I hope my paintings can be most fully appreciated.” Grant says that Terrace Downs is the perfect environment for his launch. “As well as being an exceptional local venue, the magnificent surrounding vistas provide a totally appropriate environment.”

Paintings on exhibition will reflect almost a decade of Grant’s work. The line up will feature some of the originals that are already well-known through their reproduction as art prints through to some of his more recent impressionist, Monet-inspired knife paintings. Although some paintings will be of local vistas, works on exhibition will feature landscapes from both islands. “I really don’t want to limit myself to painting just one part of our country as a value of my brand”, says Grant. “There is so much diversity countrywide that I can keep painting, keep learning and never get bored. These days I more frequently include animal life or manmade objects to convey my stor,y and that gives me plenty of scope to create a sense of place”.
