The competition kicks off on 3 June with the not-to-be-missed Judging the Judges. Host Kerry Stevens grills all of the judges about what role competitions had in their own stellar careers. Later that evening Welcome Back Winner features a beautifully-crafted recital by the 2009 winner Josef Spacek and competition pianist Sarah Watkins. This session includes a prelude to An Insider's Guide.
Semi-final Rounds 1 and 2 are intended to separate the men from the boys. All 18 international competitors are put through the wringer with the demands of Paganini, Bach and NZ-er John Psathas' newly commissioned work. Collaborating pianists Sarah Watkins and Diedre Irons accompany these rising stars on Mozart and Romantic-era sonatas, and fiery “showpieces”.
Purchase an all-session pass and hear it all throughout the holiday weekend. An Insider's Guide (free to all ticket holders) provides insightful tools to develop your discerning listening abilities.
