Part of the Te Taumata exhibition series for 2011, organised by Auckland Council, our annual Matariki show this year will feature Maureen Lander's fascinating woven work.
In an essay written for the catalogue which will accompany the show, the artist comments:
'...a survey of my work as an installation artist is easier said than done. Installation art is an ephemeral practice and my inclination has always been towards the "site-specific", a form of art making in which meaning is inextricably interlinked with the location and context for which the work is created...When the exhibition closes and the work is dismantled it is as if the paint has been scraped off the canvas. The process of removing components of an installation transforms them into stored "artefacts". This is also true of the many beautiful taonga that have inspired my practice - taonga hidden away in museum collections dislocated from their places of origin and circumstances of their making. They can be brought to life again in special circumstances...'
For those with an interest in installation, contemporary art, contemporary Maori art, fibre and weaving - or for those who just want to get out and celebrate our own New Zealand New Year, Matariki - this exhibition should not be missed!
