Louise McRae’s sculptural, wall-based assemblages bring discarded building materials and the debris of her rural environment into new frames of reference.
McRae’s practice involves painting upon scrap timber which she then splits into shards and reassembles into matrixes of varying shapes and formats. Though the physical labour involved in making these works is undeniable, the works also have a quality of self-generation: shards congregate and tessellate as though they have floated into their respective positions.
Though smaller in scale than McRae’s other recent works, these works swell with movement and colour. For this series, McRae has employed a lustrous charred timber which, when juxtaposed with silver leaf and pockets of strong, clear colour, gives the pieces a jewel-like quality.
The works suggest, rather than depict, elements of McRae’s environment. Many have a strong element of relief – they no longer suggest their base materials so much as evoke the experience of landscape; each surface presenting the eye with a new terrain to survey.
