You are cordially invited to attend the opening of this exciting new photographic exhibition.

nkb Gallery is pleased to present a collaborative exhibition by Becky Nunes and Jan Young. Through their photographic works each investigates 'surface' as both a barrier and an invitation to the gaze.

In her series of still-life works, Nunes engages with ideas of tapu, ritual and superstition, where objects accrue meaning through repeated acts of devotion. Young's direct portraits of women invite the viewer to contemplate persona, without the presence of environmental clues.

Becky Nunes has an established profile as an award-winning commercial photographer. She also works as an educator and HOD (Photography) at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design. Becky has shown at Gus Fisher Gallery in Auckland and had images published in several books, including the highly acclaimed Penguin NZ publication "Mau Moko, the history of Maori Tattoo".

Jan Young exhibits for the second time at nkb gallery, adding further weight to her growing body of photographic works. She has previously exhibited at Auckland War Memorial Museum and currently has an image in Te Papa Museum's internationally touring show Whales Tohora. Jan's ongoing work within the PhotoForum organisation continues her passion for NZ photography.

This exhibition is part of the Auckland Festival of Photography 2011, with the preview night being included in the festival's Gravity Circuit evening - nine shows over nine venues all in the one night, between 6-9pm.
