Acknowledge the first day of Matariki, Māori New Year, by attending a special dawn karakia (prayer) to herald the arrival of the first moon after the initial rising of the star constellation known as Matariki. Everyone is welcome to gather at the summit of Tāmaki Makaurau’s iconic Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) for this special ceremony.
It is the first event of Matariki Festival 2011 and a great way to start your Māori New Year celebrations. The blessing will be at Stardome Observatory if the weather prevents it occurring outdoors.
