Despite the obstacles confronting our secondary students and teachers, there has been no drop in support for choral singing. Identical to last year, a total of 28 choirs from 21 schools will participate in this year’s festival.
Choirs will come from Methven, Geraldine and Ashburton as well as Christchurch state, integrated and private schools, some of which have been sharing sites. Taking advantage of the situation, Papanui High and Shirley Boys High Schools have entered a combined choir of 60 voices.
Each choir will perform its selection, which must include at least one piece by a NZ composer, at rostered intervals during the day. A written report is issued to each choir by the adjudicator, who will decide, with other regional adjudicators, which choirs will be invited to the National Finale in the Wellington Town Hall from 22 to 24 August. The adjudicator this year is Stephen Rowe, former Cathedral chorister, member of National Youth Choir and Voices New Zealand, and currently Secondary Music facilitator for Auckland and Northland.
The general public is encouraged to attend, with free admission this year throughout the day, while each school performs its bracket of items. There is no lift in the venue.
