Fresh from a hit season in the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, Space Race tells the incredible true story of our nation's very own mission to the moon.
It's 1969, and the small Manawatu town of Sanson is going through a purple patch. The old tree is in bloom, the creek's eel infestation is under control, and the local tram is looking quainter than ever. None of this matters to Laurie Marshall however. A tractor mechanic-cum-inventor, Laurie has always dreamed of building something great. When news of America's imminent Apollo 11 launch reaches New Zealand, Laurie takes it upon himself to beat the yanks to the moon by constructing a space ship in his backyard out of old tractors. It's an insane plan, but one that might just put his town, and his country, on the world map once and for all.
Written and performed by Nic Sampson and Joseph Moore, with Simon Ward and Josephine Stewart-Tewhiu, and directed by Thomas Sainsbury, Space Race is an unique and euphoric tale of a man who dreamed of the stars... and then just got on with it.
"beautifully outlandish... a hilarious Kiwi battler story" - New Zealand Herald
"bright, bold, and bonkers... a sparkling script." - Craccum
