Artists in the Pacific Respond to Gauguin by Dr Caroline Vercoe, Art History Department, University of Auckland.
Gauguin has become a mythical figure for many, representing polarised and polemical tropes relating to artistic creativity, adventure and freedom as well as colonial fantasy, sexual exploitation and disease.
Contemplating recent major exhibitions of Gauguin's work, including the very recent major show at the Tate Modern, Dr Vercoe will draw on her current research to discuss artists from the Pacific who have responded to Gauguin's body of work and legacy.
Venue: Second Floor of the Auckland City Library, Lorne Street.
To book, phone 09 307 7705 or email galleryfriends@aucklandartgallery.govt.nz.
Image: Tyla Vaeau, Tehamana has many Ancestors, 2008. Printed with the permission of the artist.
