Fundamental shapes and forms possess the ability to act as a transcending force to deeper meaning. The honest integrity of these shapes provokes enquiry as to how we engage with the world at large. To what extent are our actions, feelings and emotions governed by forces that may appear too large to contemplate?

Finding meaning in the turmoil that life throws at us seems a tall order but perhaps the longing itself gives rise to a sense of equanimity. Will we be able to muster all our resolve and find time for quiet contemplation?

Using various media in 3-dimensional form is a means to connect with the physical world and allows for a certain kind of participation on the part of the viewer. Honouring the intrinsic value of the different materials used is important to the artist.

Originally from the Netherlands, sculptor and designer Rene Jansen immigrated to New Zealand at the age of 21, and now lives locally in Laingholm. Using aluminium, brass, canvas and wood his large geometric sculptures are impressive in their scale, craftsmanship and grace.
