Professional development workshop for visual arts teachers with Michael Shepherd.

The Post-Modern Landscape
Michael Shepherd will lead this one-day visual arts teacher workshop with a discussion of the history of the environment and landscape painting, and a presentation of his recent work. Central to Shepherd’s current practice is the relevance of exploring environmental concerns in the treatment of the contemporary landscape and ongoing thematic concerns with nature and culture.

Participants will engage in practical workshop responding to the immediate environment by developing a series of thumbnail and small painted sketches that can later be extended into finished works. A variety of drawing and painting materials will be explored including graphite, conte, watercolour, and acrylics.

Please bring warm clothing, a folding chair, drawing board, digital camera, and laptop if possible, and a few images that you have taken of the environment (these could include landscapes with signs of human presence such as farms, car wrecking yards, wetlands, industrial sites and so on).

A catered lunch and all drawing and painting materials will be provided (please bring special brushes if required)

Michael Shepherd is a high profile artist with an extensive teaching and exhibition background. Shortly after graduating with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Hons) from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, he was awarded a QEII Arts Council Grant to travel to study 17th Century Dutch painting, materials and techniques in Amsterdam. He has exhibited extensively throughout New Zealand, and his work is now held in major national collections and in private collections in New Zealand and internationally.

Course fee: $170 (GST inclusive). Prompt booking is essential as course places are strictly limited
