North Harbour Big Band

Presented by Auckland Jazz & Blues Club. Formed in 1997, the North Harbour Swing Band still numbers several founder members in its ranks.

The 18-piece band's repertoire focuses on music of the great standards of the 1940s Swing Era; those of Basie, Dorsey, Ellington, Goodman, Glenn Miller and others. Later exciting melodies extend their range closer to the present day, but with the support and encouragement of a growing audience of regular dancers their aim is to provide music easy to listen to and to dance to. Dance styles range through swing, Latin, jazz, quickstep, foxtrot, and waltz, to pop and rock 'n roll.

Under the capable guidance of Musical Director Ross Hurley, a trombone player of wide international experience, the band has been the resident band of the North Shore Jazz Club for 4 years, has played for private functions at the Gulf Harbour Golf Club, Piha Bowling Club, North Shore Netball Club, and has been a regular contributor at the Mangere Bridge Jazz Festival.

They are fortunate to be accompanied by talented vocalists Kathryn Hopkins and Mike Murane.

Their present home base is the East Coast Bays RSA in Browns Bay, where their regular dance is held on the last Sunday of every month. In recent years the band has been providing the afternoon dance music for the ECB RSA's day-long Anzac Day Commemorations
