Take a walk along the rivers of the world - meet the people they sustain, hear the stories they reveal and share in the rituals they inspire.
Join the NZ Japan Society of Auckland who have created a day to celebrate water, Japanese style.
Hear the stories and music of the river and take part in a special classic tea ceremony steeped in tradition. Taiko, dance performances, and film will complete the programme of activities exploring the revered status of water in Japan. Water in balance is intrinsic to the culture of Japan, the juxtaposition of opposites Yin and Yang (pronounced ‘in’ and yo’ in Japanese) is a central concept in Japanese philosophy and is evident in architecture and cultural practices.
There are many rivers in the mountainous islands of Japan but the Tonegawa River stands out as the supplier of water for more than 30 million inhabitants of the Tokyo metropolitan area. Its history is of an uncontrollable river prone to flooding with a route that often changed its path causing havoc in its surrounding areas. This was resolved when it was artificially redirected to its current path, which ultimately flows into the Pacific Ocean.
Free. Entry via Atrium.
