Influenced by the carving histories and teachings of his heritage, New Plymouth artist Josh Manu (Taranaki, Nga Mahanga, Chinese, Dutch), uses processes similar to techniques of traditional wood-carving taught to him by his uncle, as well as actual carvings made by his grandfather to render Māori archetypes in contemporary media. With subtle visual references to Taranaki landscape and industry, taniwha-esque creatures with hill-like heads emerge from the sea and give voice to an imagined, primordial land.
