NZSO Soloists Tour No. 2

Experience the HEART of the NZSO.

The brass section of the NZSO takes its turn to shine in this richly coloured program of great brass-music classics. Encompassing a broad spectrum of time and place, the program culminates in Handel’s champagne-cork-popping music for a great open-air celebration, paired with the Renaissance Venetian splendour of Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon X. The first half of the program takes us to the quintessential Englishness of Elgar’s competition piece, a suite of movements describing scenes which brass instruments so splendidly evoke: tournament, cathedral, castle and a gathering of knights. Grieg’s music for the funeral of a young friend is stately and solemn, while Richard Strauss’s legendary Festmusik, written in gratitude to the City of Vienna, is one of the most impressive ceremonial works of all time. Don’t miss this rare chance to hear this stirring and splendiferous music.

“The brass section is not just the muscle of the orchestra!it’s capable of intense lyrical beauty, as this concert will show. By bringing it from the back-row to centre-stage, this is brass as you’ve never heard it before!" -Vesa-Matti Leppänen, Director
