UK jazz and world music singer, Carolina Moon’s new work Mother Tongue, is an evocative collection of sensual Ladino melodies from medieval Sephardic Spain.
Described as 'utterly beguiling' by the Sydney Morning Herald, Moon’s vocal weaves Eastern and Western blends into these ancient songs in a programme of exquisite melodies, charismatic klezmer feels and flamenco grooves together with contemporary jazz tinges of Mike Nock and Jan Garbarek.
Performing with Carolina are the virtuosic strings, sounds and textures of Nigel Gavin, Roger Manins (soprano sax, clarinets, flute), Jessica Hindin (violin), Kevin Field (piano), Matthias Erdich (double bass) and Chris O’Connor (percussion, drums).
“Glorious songs - intimate, yearning, emotional.“ - Graham Reid
"ODE raises the bar spectacularly with Mother Tongue, on which Moon breathes new life into these lovely Sephardic ruminations." - Graham Steel, Metro Magazine (May 2011)
Carolina worked with Australian pianist Mark Isaacs on the songs which have now been curated into Mother Tongue, and released at her WOMAD debut NZ 2011. They were first performed for the Carnivale Festival and the Great Synagogue, Sydney. Carolina performs in New Zealand and has performed extensively in London, the UK, Australia, (SIMA, Carnivale, Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival), India, China, and the greater Pacific.
