Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera which highlights the political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot (Jason Schmidt) and Jesus (Matthew Pike). The opera is based very loosely on the Gospel’s account of the last week of Jesus’ life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his Disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the Crucifixion.
The cast is undoubtedly one of the strongest ever assembled for an IMT show. Superstar is full of local celebrities, including Jason Schmidt, Craig Waddell, Michelle Lange, Nathan Hughes, Barry McDonald and Dene Allen. Matthew Pike from Wellington is in the title role of Jesus.
Jesus Christ Superstar was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced on the professional stage. The Show opened on 12th October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, New York and ran for 2 years. Superstar was originally a concept recording which produced the hits "Superstar" and "I Don’t Know How to Love Him" in 1970 before opening in New York. The London production of Superstar opened 9th August 1972 at the Palace theatre where it played for 8 years or 3,358 performances, the longest ever running West End show at the time.
