A 20-year survey exhibition at Uxbridge Creative Centre will reveal the artistic developments of self-taught artist Richard Boyd-Dunlop.
As Richard Boyd-Dunlop begins a new chapter in his creative career by attending Elam School of Fine Arts, his latest exhibition at Uxbridge Creative Centre will be a cross-section of paintings, drawings, mixed media and textile design created 1990 – 2010.
After a summer spent painting t-shirts in Howick Village in the late 1980s, Richard realised that ‘art was going to be an important thing’. A fulltime artist since 2001, Richard worked mainly in acrylics, using pure colours to create all-over expressionist compositions within which the viewer discovers new elements at every glance. Initially influenced by the colour techniques and cellular compositions of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser after frequently visiting Kerikeri in the upper North Island, Richard began exploring environmental issues and the constant struggle between man and nature. This culminated in his Estuary Artworks 2007 winning work Community – a highly-populated canvas saturated with metaphors exploring the Tamaki Estuary’s unique ecosystem and its lack of balance with the developing infrastructure. As his career developed, his canvases become less busy and more refined with greater attention placed on form and texture. More recently, following extensive overseas travel, he has taken his style to another dimension by using holographics and screenprints to create large-scale experiments into the interaction between shape and surface.
Richard Boyd-Dunlop: A Survey, 1990-2010 will illustrate the development of Richard’s style over the last two decades – from throwing everything at the canvas to concentrating on refining only a few ideas. The exhibition will feature never-before-seen works at the venue where he had his first exhibition back in the early 1990s Boyd-Dunlop is represented in the Auckland Council Collection as well as private collections nationally and internationally.
The exhibition will open on Thursday July 14th at 6.30pm and will run until August 3rd. Numerous fun and engaging public programmes for the whole family will be offered during the exhibition period, including an artist discussion on Saturday 23rd July and a curator’s tour on Sat 30th July. Public programme information can be found on their website www.uxbridge.org.nz.
