West Side Story is a modern day take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It has all the passion of a well-written love story (between Maria and Tony) and all the violence of two clashing street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Maria is the sister of the leader of the Sharks and Tony is a member of the Jets. As with Romeo and Juliet, the romance is ill fated, with deaths and anguish underscoring the production.
West Side Story is a total production with strong dialogue, well recognised music and exciting dance scenes. The musical received rave reviews for its unflinching portrayal of gang life. It opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1957 and ran for 3 years before going on tour. The show ran even longer in London and also toured Israel, Africa and the Near East in 1961.
A movie version came out in 1961 starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer. West Side Story has continued to be performed by various groups in many countries over the intervening years, and is seen as a portrayal of current events. The material is realistic, grim and alive with social problems. Dance carries much of the action, and although the ugliness and agony of slum life in New York is portrayed, so is some of the beauty and poetry that is also part of the lives of these young people.
West Side Story is a ‘must see’ production directed by Terry Coyle, who is an extremely accomplished actor (on stage and small screen), writer and director.
