Experience PASSION with the NZSO.
One of the modern masters of the conductor’s podium, Pinchas Steinberg takes the NZSO on a journey into the soul of Russian music. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth is the work in which the composer unleashes for the first time the full power of his personal, romantic feelings in symphonic form. It is fired by his deepest emotions, traversing the joys and sadness of life and “fate” before reaching its exuberant conclusion. Triumphant exuberance is also at the heart of Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, orchestra and soloist uniting to give expression to Prokofiev’s brilliant powers of musical invention. In the hands of the young firebrand Simon Trpceski, the thrilling power of this music is sure to achieve its complete realization. The concert opens with Mussorgsky’s engrossing sound-picture of a Witches’ Sabbath, a favourite work in the popular imagination ever since its depiction in Walt Disney’s Fantasia.
“Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 4" … the conductor was an engaged and energetic presence … The whirlwind finale, with its frenzied rejoicing, showed a surprising degree of animal intensity … Steinberg led a dynamic performance.” -Miami Herald, USA
“Another energy surge came with Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, a work that requires the pianists’ hands to leap and yell. No problem for Simon Trpceski … whose finger power and feeling for rhythm is second to none.” -The Times, UK
