Following sold-out seasons in Australia, the award-winning show The Man in Black – The Johnny Cash Story comes to Christchurch's CBS Canterbury Arena.
The show, winner of the 2010 Helpmann Award Best Australian Contemporary Concert, interweaves Cash’s much-revered music with the fascinating story of his rise to stardom, his fight for survival and his eventual redemption.
Multi-ARIA award-winning Australian singer Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea) brings the country music legend to life, leading The Tennessee Four. He is joined by singer Rachael Tidd as June Carter Cash.
“The tools of Perkin’s trade are deep felt emotion, fine tuned expression and utter authenticity. Instinctively, he balances passion and restraint. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.” – The Mercury, Hobart
“Tex Perkins blazes through this two hour tribute to Johnny Cash, the hard-living, hell-raising American singer-songwriter … singing blues, country, gospel and rock.” – Sun Herald, Sydney
“When Tex Perkins grabs the microphone and growls ‘I’m Johnny Cash’ you believe him.” – The Australian
The show features dozens of Cash's greatest hits including Ring of Fire, I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Get a Rhythm and Bird on a Wire.
The Man in Black is a two hour show celebrating the life and times of one of the most incredible singers, songwriters and entertainers ever to grace the stage – a man who stood up for the downtrodden, the disenfranchised, the indigenous Americans, the imprisoned and all those who had suffered a raw deal in life.
