Pip E-Lysaah, of The Red Queens is New Zealand's most well trained and influential tribal fusion performer, and has been getting around the country teaching quite a bit over the last few months, giving workshops in Tauranga, Hamilton and Adelaide, and travelling to the US for training and performances! We are lucky enough to be hosting her for a weekend of belly dance and tribal fusion workshops in Auckland! There will be workshops throughout the day on 16th-17th July, as well as a hafla (belly dance party with performances) on Saturday evening 16th July! Don't miss the chance to see Pip E-Lysaah perform live! Please contact us if you or your group would like to perform at the hafla! Read on to find out more about Pip, Candice, Dori and their upcoming workshops!
Saturday 16th July:
10:00am-12pm ($45) Spook-O-Rama – tribal fusion choreography with Pip E-Lysaah.
Deceptively simple combos and with layered options, it uses theatrics and personality for the final wow factor. Bring your darkness for a gothic feel, or your humour for a more light-hearted dance. With 3 flavours of shimmies and some step toe toes, this piece is built on combinations and finishes with a drop. If you wanna get perky, this is the one for you.
12:15pm-2:15pm ($45) Arabic Flamenco Choreography with Candice:
This workshop was sold out at MEDANZ this year, so if you missed the chance to attend, here it is! A stunning fusion between these two delicate and powerful dance styles! Flamenco has strong hand movements and impressive footwork, which matched together with the shimmies and undulations of belly dance, draws out the proud feminine essence in each of us! In this workshop you will learn the choreography "Arabian Flame" to Alabina. Workshop notes will be provided. Bring a big full circle skirt if you have one.
2:30pm-3:30pm ($25) Tribal Fusion Confusion with Pip E-Lysaah:
This is a special workshop that allows for you to ask as many questions as you like and receive verbal and demonstrated answers. There will be a review and handout on the differences between Tribal Fusion, Tribal, ATS, Gypsy Caravan and how Oriental fits into our belly dance world.
Sunday 17th July
10am-12pm ($45) Shimmies with Pip E-Lysaah:
3 quarter up, 3 quarter down, 3 quarter; out, even-time, auto pilot, shoulder, hip, leg, washing machine, jack hammer, Egyptian, vibration...now layer it. The shimmy workshop breaks down 4 common shimmies and shows you how to layer the shimmy over your other movements. The key is muscle isolation and understanding how the shimmy works. This workshop gives you it all.
12:15pm-2:15pm ($45) Oriental and Folkloric Technique with Dori and Candice:
This workshop will help you in understanding the difference between Oriental and Folkloric technique and the various styles within those! Dori and Candice will take you through a series of movements that will unravel the mysteries behind this intricate dance art, and explain the subtle nuances that can be found in the music, the culture, the meaning and the movement of belly dance!
2:30pm-4:30pm ($45) Tribal Fusion for Oriental Dancers with Pip E-Lysaah:
An original workshop designed especially to show experienced (1-2 years+) oriental dancers the basics behind tribal fusion dance. This workshop focuses on the ‘tribal-ness’ and musicality behind tribal fusion. Going over posture, muscle control and how to limit and control your movement for this style. Includes a short combo-ography.
- Please note times may vary slightly.
The hafla will be held from 7pm on Sat 16 July, at the Pioneer Women's Hall (Freyberg Square, Auckland CBD).
