Ten short films commissioned to bring visual artists’ work into cinemas in subversive and playful ways. Six international works commissioned by the Independent Cinema Office and LU X (UK ). Four works by New Zealand artists curated by Mark Williams with support from Creative New Zealand. Introduced by Mark Williams with Q&A to follow.
2.5 Kilometre Mono Action for a Mirage
Alex Monteith/NZ 2011/4 mins/35mm, originating medium s16
Flux, balance, illusion. A moto-X rider (Mark Buxeda) pulls a continuous wheelie over 2.5 kilometres of coast-line north of Muriwai in Aotearoa New Zealand. Photography by Duncan Cole and sound by Jeffery Holdaway.
Carmen San Diego Out of Work and On the Run
Sean Grattan/NZ/USA 2010/10 mins/HD
A philosophical drama in which nothing dramatic takes place – a production that plugs wordy explanations of content into a cinematic form that looks like an action movie but sounds like a lecture.
Voodoo Dog
Gray Nicol/NZ 2011/5 mins/HD
Like a bad omen, the artist’s work begins to prefigure more serious real life events. “I’ve got to be a bit more careful with these sculptures.”
Between Worlds
Philip Dadson/NZ 2011/11 mins/HD
A single boat prow navigates through a series of landscapes, charting the interconnectedness of time, people and space.
Pulmo Marina
Aurelien Froment/USA 2010/5 mins
A pale yellow jellyfish roils and bristles like a fragment of living lace, while a slightly officious voiceover informs us of its baroque but literally brainless anatomy.
Tomorrow Everything Will Be Alright
Akram Zaatari/Lebanon 2010/7 mins/35mm, DVD, HD Video
A late-night online chat between two men who haven’t met since the turn of the millennium leads to their reunion after ten years of separation.
This Quality
Rosalind Nashashibi/Egypt/UK 2010/5 mins/35mm, DVD
Shot in downtown Cairo, This Quality is a wordless meditation on what we see and what remains hidden.
The Coat
Keren Cytter/Germany 2010/6 mins
A dramatic love triangle between two brothers obsessed with the game of Sudoku and a young woman.
A Love Story
Amar Kanwar/India 2010/6 mins
A miniature narrative in four acts set on the fringe of an expanding Indian city, a place built on continuous migration and continuous separations.
Ausgeträumt
Deimantas Narkevicius/Lithuania 2010/6 mins/35mm, DVD
Fascinated with naiveté, Narkevicius documents a group of Lithuanian boys who have just started a band, interspersing shots of their winter surroundings in Vilnius.
