The sixth triennial Association for Women in the Sciences (AWIS) conference will provide a forum for women working in research, business and education or studying science to learn from other women working in the New Zealand science industry. The conference programme will include keynotes and panel discussions with women who are leaders in their fields, workshops for career and personal development, as well as sessions to discuss some of the key scientific issues facing us in the 21st century and opportunities to network with other women working in the New Zealand science industry.
Topics under discussion will include how to deal with the media, communicating with schools, how to get a new job, and current research in the areas of climate change, food security, medical science and nanotechnology. The conference will also include poster displays from women working in research organisations.
The programme includes a panel discussion on “Current challenges in New Zealand science”, chaired by Di McCarthy, CEO of the Royal Society with speakers Helen Anderson, former Chief Executive of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology; Professor Jane Harding, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) at The University of Auckland; Lindsey Conner, President of the New Zealand Association of Science Educators; and Tracey Sunderland, Chief Operating Officer of CoDa Therapeutics.
The winner of the Women in Science Entrepreneurship award, in association with Pacific Channel, will also be announced during the conference.
The Developing Women – Advancing Science conference is sponsored by The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Science, the University of Waikato, Dairy New Zealand, the Public Service Association, the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand, the Institute for Innovation in Biotechnology, the Royal Society of New Zealand, the Centre for Science Communication at the University of Otago, Plant & Food Research, the Maurice Wilkins Centre and Unlimited magazine.
