Joy Chang’s show at nkb Gallery is one not to be missed. Her magical and confident paintings are dominated by colour and form, and influenced by environment and travel - lending this refreshing collection of new work both maturity and ease.

Having recently completed her Master of Fine Art at London’s Slade School of Art Chang has used her camera to capture a fascination with London as a city. Translating that material into mixed media pieces Chang’s interest in architectural elements, colour, light and geometric form becomes palatable.

As an artist Chang explores ‘parts of the whole’, rather than the ‘whole’, and transfers this detail into her work, with small pieces of her urban surroundings dominating the entire collection. These delicate yet powerful pieces depict a somewhere else, which lies between real places, memories and imagined spaces.

Using luminous washes, large vistas of vivid colour, and dream-like floating spaces Chang’s show is welcoming, mysterious, and utterly attention grabbing - reflecting the recent influence of London on this talented young artist, and cementing her future as an admirable New Zealand talent.

The artist’s carefully constructed abstraction, and unique use of thread and wall paint in this installation, acts as an extension of the paintings - creating an appearing and disappearing effect that quietly links each piece effortlessly together.

Joy Chang brings to nkb a cohesive show that is both assured and uplifting.
