These prints are a visual comment on events that have taken place since Cook's visit in 1769 to Turanganui a Kiwa, renamed by him - Poverty Bay.
I have spent this year drawing Te Kuri – Young Nicks Head. First I approached the headland from the sea, a route familiar to Maori and Cook. The government recently granted the cliffs to Ngai Tamanuhiri as a National Reserve. The rest of the headland remains in private ownership. The cliffs are fragile and often chunks slide into the sea. In October I spent a week staying on Muriwai beach at the foot of the cliffs. Early in the morning I climbed Te Kuri and paid my respects to Te Rangihoua - the pa site. The whole coast is spread out before you. It is a breathtaking place. I was overcome with a great sense of loss. This historic place for Maori and Pakeha was sold with government approval to an absentee US citizen in 2002.
Exhibition starts 15 December 2011 until 26 January 2012.
