Since 2008, JETAA (JET Alumni Association) Wellington has held Japanese lessons in Wellington. Initially, these were targeted at recently returned JET Programme participants, so that they could keep up and improve their Japanese language ability after returning to Wellington. There was also demand for Japanese language classes from the public, and from those intending to sit the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

Classes are open to JETAA members, and members of the general public who also want to continue their study of Japanese. The upper beginner/intermediate level is aimed at students around level N4-N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT); we recommend knowledge of Hiragana and Katakana as a base, and around N2-N1 for the advanced class.

This year’s JETAA Japanese language lessons started in June. This year, there are two levels, upper beginner/lower intermediate and upper intermediate/advanced. The upper beginner/lower intermediate classes will be held on Mondays and the advanced classes on Wednesdays. See the schedule for dates. The classes will be held in a clock of 10 lessons.

The full fee is payable in cash on the first lesson, with no casual attendance/payments this year. This fee goes towards snacks and photocopying fees, and possibly a dinner after the 10 lessons have finished.

Elevator access is available from 5.30pm.
Schedule: The schedule for the Monday classes is below, see the JETAA website for the Wednesday schedule.

Registration: Please e-mail the below address to register. Put “JETAA Japanese Language Lessons registration” in the subject. Class limit: 20 students for each class

jetaawellington@gmail.com

Course structure: On registration you will be sent a questionnaire to determine your wishes for the structure of the course. Please return this as soon as possible. The teacher will design the course based on these.

About the teacher: Mr. Daiji Kataoka is a Japanese teacher by trade with extensive experience in the field. He currently is the head of Japanese at Wainuiomata High School. He is a fully registered teacher with a BA in Linguistics and a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary), both from Massey University.
