Jana Kaestner is a young artist from Germany who came to NZ in 2009. After travelling the country by bike she settled in KeriKeri and worked as a graphic designer. There she also returned to painting and pottery, which she had been doing since childhood.
Since her visit to New York city in 2006 she has worked on a series of paintings about the city, that she fell so much in love with. Deeply touched by the 9/11 attacks she also wanted to create her own tribute to that dark day.
The final series 'Songs About New York', which she is going to exhibit in the Old Library in Whangarei from 11.09 to 09.10.2011, is now complete. The paintings are made with acrylics and newspaper cut outs on canvas. Each work is inspired by a certain song about New York.
From the dark and cheerful songs to the famous and lesser known ones, you will find each painting still has one common feature: they all relate to New York City.
The exhibition opening 'Songs about New York' will be on 11.09.2011 from 5pm to 7pm.
