Course content:
This course will cover the principles of film production in NZ, as well as offering an insight into real world filmmaking. By the end of the week participants will have taken part in making at least one ‘documentary’ style video, as well as at least one ‘drama’ style production through all stages from pre-production to final product. Guest tutors will also be engaged to cover some areas in more detail stemming directly from their industry experience.
'The Script Lounge' Summer Do Video school will give a general overview of the principles of film/video/TV making here in NZ/Aotearoa. Participants will be given a general introduction into the world of professional filmmaking including: crew roles, equipment, producing, production management, directing, editing and scriptwriting. They will also learn about what Industry resources and support organisations are currently available. By the end of the week, it is expected that participants will have taken part in making at least one 'documentary' style video, as well as at least one 'drama' style production. Guest tutors will also be engaged to cover some areas in more detail, e.g. directing, camera, editing etc. Screenings of NZ and international productions will also be part of the course, as well as hand-outs/resources. By the end of the course it is hoped participants will have a more thorough knowledge and appreciation of film/video/TV.
If all guest tutors are available, it is hoped that we can work as a teaching 'collective', allowing the participants to form small groups and therefore to have worked through a lot more teaching, exercises, and practical experience by the week's end.
Tutor profile:
Karen has had a varied experience in the NZ TV and film industries since the mid 1980s. During this time she has worked a variety of roles including: production manager, researcher, director, and writer. She describes herself as 'A Filmmaker, working as a scriptwriter by passion and in various other roles as necessity'. An array of guest tutors who are professionals in the industry will make special appearances thoughout the course of the workshop to share their skills and knowledge.
