Everybody is invited to the (un)official Auckland [really Russell] Anniversary Weekend nice, regal garden party in the beautiful heritage gardens of Pompallier Mission.
Although it's called Auckland Anniversary, in actual fact the holiday commemorates William Hobson's 1840 landing at Kororareka-Russell to declare himself New Zealand's first Governor - a week before the Treaty signing at Waitangi. To celebrate, people are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy home-grown entertainment provided by Russell's many talented local musicians and dancers. Fancy dress optional.
