Give Up, No Way is the latest painting exhibition by Grey Lynn artist Craig Ellis. His work, a dramatic narrative in paint, continues to explore his life-changing journey since sustaining a traumatic brain injury from a road accident on Richmond Road in 2007.
Engulfed with massive fatigue, frustration, despair and depression, his early days after his accident were dark. But somehow Ellis’ faith, hope and refusal to give up, transported him to a new world of recovery. Consequently humour and wit play an increasing role in his work. Words, dynamic typography, graphic symbols and bold colour are utilised to mark emotional states and convey meaning, providing witness to his ongoing rehabilitation.
It is common with traumatic brain injuries for the brain to become overloaded when processing information, easily becoming overstimulated and overwhelmed. Thus Ellis’ early work after the accident was stylistically minimal, devoid of multiple layers, texture and movement, an approach necessary to his state of health. Ellis’ paintings are a striking combination of paint and screen printing, drawing on his expertise in graphic design.
On display in the inspiring exhibition will be work spanning from 2008 to 2011, encompassing various stages of recovery. An uninhibited tale of Ellis’ life, this is an exhibition not to be missed.
