This show reflects my years at sea, my interest in St. Ives and the influence of seaman painter Alfred Wallis whose studio I visited in the early 1970s. Working with cut-out recycled tin has allowed me to create works that are part sculpture, part painting with a large amount of nostalgia. The solid, riveted ships of my time at sea that ended up in Taiwan and other scrap-yards were to be replaced by faster and larger container boats — they weren’t for me so I came ashore to take up painting. Only now am I enjoying the shapes of these modern boats, although still not wanting to sail on them.
