The Oceanbridge Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta is New Zealand's oldest sporting event.
The Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta celebrates 171 years on Monday, 31 January 2011 with a sailing fleet of hundreds of different craft on Waitemata Harbour, a festival on land and a display of flying prowess in the skies.
Dragonboats, waka ama canoes, an armada of vintage tugs and workboats, elegant classic yachts and launches, nippy centreboarders and some of the fastest racers in the southern hemisphere will be competing in their respective classes for cash prizes and legendary silver trophies in a day of spectacular racing.
In 2011 a large fleet of some of Auckland’s legendary classic racing yachts will be racing on the Waitemata Harbour and many of these beautifully restored vessels will be lit on Sunday evening at their moorings in Viaduct Harbour.
A highlight of the day will be the tugboat race at 10am with some 30 vintage tugs and towing launches, joining the line up with a grunt and roarfollowed by a display and parade of tugs through the ages around Viaduct Harbour.
The presence of the RNZS frigate HMNZS Wellington as flagship for the day will add to the pomp and spectacle of the Regatta and the Warbirds and Red Checkers will perform an aerial display from 11.15 downtown.
Best vantage points: Bastion Point, North Head, East Coast Bays, Tamaki Drive, Orakei and Princes Wharf
