Detenebrate: to free from darkness or obscurity.

New Plymouth artist Jacqueline Elley works with light and muka, an organic, processed flax fibre traditionally produced in Taranaki, to explore the tensions between nature/culture, illumination/ darkness and containment/fluidity. For this site-specific installation, Elley references historical and contemporary Maori and Pakeha approaches to muka, transforming the Open Window gallery space into a lightbox.

Elley graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 1999 and was awarded the painting prize that year.
