Hikoikoi are a New Zealand based three-piece who blend reggae dub with rich psychedelic rock. The music is an infectious hybrid of soaring melodic vocals, dubbed out dance rhythms and sub-sonic roots vibrations. You can catch them this New years Eve at Cabana, after which they head to Gisborne to play at Rhythm and Vines.
Their debut album shot to number four on the New Zealand independent charts and was nominated as ‘best breakthrough band’ at the New Zealand Music Awards. They have shared the stage with legends such as The Original Wailers and Groundation and have played at festivals around New Zealand and Australia including Australia’s largest world music festival The Dreaming.
This August saw Hikoikoi head to Europe with a ground breaking 12 venue tour. This debut European tour saw them play in Berlin at the world’s largest bier garden; The international Berlin Bier Festival. Their flying trip also saw Hikoikoi play at KulturBüxe in Waren, Flevo Festival in Holland and some of the hottest clubs in Prague, Brussels and Amsterdam before they head to the UK. Once in London Hikoikoi played at London’s infamous “One Love festivals", a serendipitous slot after playing One Love in New Zealand a few years ago.
Hikoikoi is Maori for “walk the walk” This reference to solidarity refers to the positive conscious messages embedded within their music. The lyrics often talk of the New Zealand experience and call for listeners to ‘walk’ with peace, unity and justice. Their live show, renowned for its high energy and high impact, is often described as ‘an experience for the head as well as the heart’, and is a performance not easily forgotten.
Don’t miss Hikoikoi at Cabana.
