Grey Lynn Business Association and the Grey Lynn area are supporting Manu Samoa as their official ‘second team’ during the RWC 2011 and have big plans to celebrate.

Four events are planned to cheer on Manu Samoa and celebrate Samoan culture and roots in the greater Grey Lynn area. These include a heritage walk, two street parties and a community festival.

The street parties will take place at the Grey Lynn Shops and the West Lynn Shops. They are early evening, family-friendly events that will showcase local heritage and culture of the area, including a strong Samoan flavour.

The Grey Lynn Street Party is the first of the two. It promises to be a vibrant evening featuring traditional Samoan entertainment showcasing its rich culture. A community event involving local retailers, churches and schools.

A wonderful opportunity to taste a medley of food from local cafes to Pacific Island food with the magic sounds of local Samoan choirs, jazz from Peta Siulepa, Natasha Urale, Opeloge Ah Sam and our very own Grey Lynn Ukuladies. Dancers from Vision Cultural Movement will be interacting with the public and there will be opportunities to learn from participating stalls and businesses how we combine our talents together.

Bring your friends and family to experience an afternoon of local businesses, music, food, singing, arts, crafts and performances.

Thanks to the Samoan Tourism Authority and Auckland Council.

The Shout for Samoa Grey Lynn Street Party saw over 800 locals and visitors sampling the various local and Pacific Island food on offer while listening to the soulful sounds of Opeloge Ah Sam’s Masque Jazz Quintet and feeling the rhythm to the Grey Lynn Ukuladies.

Tree Vaifale, the youngest singer drew a large crowd performing contemporary covers from Beyonce to Alicia Keys while established performer Natasha Baker-Urale serenaded listeners with her melodic rendition of traditional Samoan songs. Across the road was Tribal State, last year's Battle of the Bands 2nd place getter rocking a Gt North Rd street corner.

Highlights included a siva afi (fire dance) on Williamson Ave performed by Vision Cultural Movement and catching up with friends and family.

Grey Lynn business owner and co-organiser Soala Wilson says "the energy was electric, there was magic in the air and the Surrey shopping centre came alive."

Thanks again to the Samoan Tourist Authority and Auckland Cou
