Ponsonby’s very own Arts Foundation Icon Greer Twiss presents Victory, Relics and Fragments at Whitespace this month. A series of works inspired by the Victory of Samothrace.
"Victory, the Greek goddess Nike, was the winged precursor to the Christian winged messenger. The Victory that is now in the Louvre was discovered at Samothrace and removed to Paris in the late nineteenth century, where it was 'restored', much of it an extrapolation, since a very large proportion of the original was missing.
These works are further interpretations of that figure, continuing my fascination with the culture of museums."
The works are in wax and are protected in glass cases.
Greer Twiss October 2011.
