The true story of pioneer social reformer Florence Warren, a.k.a. Miss Florence leMar, the World’s Famous Ju-Jitsu Girl, and her quest to save the world from brutes, bullies and badmen alike. The first person to teach women’s self-defence in New Zealand, in 1911 - on stage, Flossie is a forgotten hero. This is her triumphant return.
LeMar (1890 – 1951) was an unconventional, inspirational proto-feminist. Armed with her apocryphal handbook, The Life and Adventures of Miss Florence leMar, The World’s Famous Ju-Jitsu Girl, she toured the Australasian circuit 1911-1914 with her sensational star turn, The Hooligan and the Lady.
This, her centennial return, takes leMar’s melodramatic 1913 self-defence manual and resurrects the tales and scenarios within. It is a piece of early antipodean vaudeville history, with fragments faithfully reprised in as close to the original as possible. See Flossie quell the Lunatic; dispatch the Desperado and vanquish the Villain with alarming ease and alacrity! Cheer her on as she dispatches roughs, rowdies and sleazebags besides.
Featuring: Allan Henry, Alex Greig and Rachel More; with Ailsa Krefft, Bailey McCormack and Patrick Keenan. Vaudeville and a master class in self-defence! Written and produced by Pauleen Hayes. Directed by Susan Dugdale.
